Paintings by Ursula Gullow
Marking her first show in Seattle since 2002, painter Ursula Gullow
will install her most recent project: a 12 foot by 6 foot mural
entitled: "There is Little Sense in Having Arrived Anywhere."
The painting has been cut into 32 square panels that will be individual paintings, yet integral to the mural as a whole.
ridging the gap between decorative and conceptual art, the mural
itself narrates a cautionary tale, while the buying and selling of
its parts serves specifically as a commentary on the
commercialization of art. More generally it is a testament to the
selling out of individuals, and communities. "We are all forced to
sell off parts of ourselves - to compromise morals -- to survive a
free market economy. There is a little death of the soul involved in
that process. Sometimes we are blissfully unaware of it; sometimes
it is painfully obvious."
Ursula Gullow began her career as a painter in Seattle, W.A. She
holds a B.A. in sociology from The State University of New York at
New Paltz, and an A.A. in graphic design from Seattle Central
Community College. Currently Ms. Gullow resides in Asheville, N.C.
where she exhibits her work frequently. Last summer she received a
scholarship to study landscape painting at the reputable craft
school, Penland in North Carolina. In her free time, Ursula writes
art reviews and volunteers with the award-winning independent weekly
newspaper, The Asheville Global Report. In May of 2005 she will be
carrying out an artist residency with the Gil-Society in Akureyri,
Iceland.
